The management of Karpowership has on Wednesday 13th May 2020 at the conference room of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, handed over five portable ventilators to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in support of the Emergency Operation Center in the fight against the corona virus.
This is not the first time the management of Karpowership is supporting the government of Sierra Leone, last month the management of Karpowership at the Emergency Operation Center donated useful items in towards the fight against the deadly corona virus in the country. The donated items include huge quantities of Chlorine, Soap, sanitizer, tissue, thermometer and veronica bucket all to the sum of over three hundred million leones.
On behalf of the management of Karpowership, the Local Project Manager Yankay Sawaneh given an overview of the operation of Karpowership since its inception stated that Karpowership is the only owner, operator and builder of the first Powership (floating power plant) fleet in the world, providing access to fast track, affordable and reliable electricity. He added that the Karpowewrship rage from 30MW to 470MW and are delivered ready to operate in less than sixty days. He said that currently Karpoer owns and operates twenty ships with an installed capacity exceeding 4,100MW and another 4400MW are under construction, adding that in addition to their power fleet karpower owns and operates its own liquefied natural gas (LNG) fleets.
“With more than 2,600 employees globally; Karpowership is operational in Indonesia, Lebanon, Mozambique, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Gambia, Senegal and the Caribbean,” he said, adding that Karpowership started operations in Sierra Leone in June 2018.
“We are currently generating reliable and affordable electricity for the good people of this country via two Powerships having a combined installed capacity of 162 MW and Karpower is currently supplying 80 % of the electricity demand in Sierra Leone and have contributed enormously to the stability of the national grid via assisting frequency and voltage control in the network,” said Mr. Sawaneh, adding that they have refurbished schools. He added that Karpower has also distributed food items to deprived people in the country.
“We trust in the authorities that these ventilators will be well utilized as the country is in dire need of ventilators due to the spread of the Virus,” he said.
The Turkish Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Ambassador Deha Erpek said that the Turkish government is always obliged to support the government and people of Sierra Leone, adding that they are very concerned about the fight against the coronavirus. He said that the five portable ventilators are very useful in the fight against the coronavirus. He said that are willing to render any assistance in the course of the operation of the five ventilators.
Sierra Leone Ambassador to Turkey Mohamed Kai-Samba stated that, ‘we are motivated by the efforts of the Government, particularly the personal involvement of H.E President Bio and we went out there with the message that every little helps is important”.
On behalf of the team, Ambassador Kai-Samba registered their profoundly gratitude to the management of Karpowership for their positive response towards the donation of five lifesaving portable ventilators that will be used in the fight against the corona virus. Ambassador Kai-Samba further stated that the generosity of the management of Karpowership will always be remembered by the people of Sierra Leone, adding that the ventilators are very useful in the fight against the corona virus.
“The COVID-19 Pandemic has placed a tremendous strain on the health care delivery system in Sierra Leone, with potential devastating health, social and economic impacts,” said Ambassador Kai-Samba.
The Minister of Energy, Alhaji Kanja Sesay in a telephone conversation said that he was following the donation on hourly basis with the management of Karpowership, adding that he thanked the Ambassador of Sierra Leone to Turkey for facilitating the donation. He said that Karpowership are partners in development and they have been supporting the government of Sierra Leone in diverse areas of development. He encouraged the people of Sierra Leone to always stay safe to help the government of Sierra Leone in the fight against the corona virus.
The Director-General, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Madam Florence Bangali thanked the management of Karpowership for being the first company in Sierra Leone to donate ventilators, and narrated the pleasure in receiving the donation on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. She explained that the Sierra Leone Embassy in Turkey has notified them since the ventilators left Turkey for Sierra Leone, and they are happy to formally receive the items to boost the fight against COVID-19.
Madame Bangali re-counted that Covid-19 fight is a national fight and they are pleased with the positive gesture Karpowership has showed since the outbreak of the virus in Sierra Leone, and extend the Ministry’s appreciation in receiving such a useful tool to help fight the deadly virus that has ravage the entire health system in the World.
She unfolded that the Minister of Foreign Affairs was unavoidable absence to attend an urgent meeting at State House, as she would have love to be in attendance to receive such donation on behalf of the Government.
The Covid-19 Emergency Operation Centre Representative, Larry Bassie receiving the donation on behalf of the EOC, and thanked the Karpowership management for boosting the EOC in such a difficult time. He assured Karpowership management that the items would be used for its intended purpose.
