AS MARINE MINISTRY DELIVERS IN FIRST QUARTER

The Ministry of Fisheries through the abled Minister Hon. Emma Kowa Jalloh has raised over 40bn Leones in the 1st Quarter of 2020 amidst the Covid -19 pandemic.

Speaking to this reporter, the Permanent Secretary of MFMR Mrs. Elizabeth H. Ellie said the Ministry continues to raise significant revenue for Government in its drive to finance development expenditures.

The Permanent Secretary revealed that the Ministry raised over 100bn Leones for FY 2019 and provided 12 improved smoke ovens, 44 toilets and wash facilities, raised platforms in Goderich,Tombo and Sulima through Government of Sierra Leone and partnership agreement with the Government of Iceland and UNDP.

Under Hon. Kowa Jalloh`s leadership, the Ministry has;

  • Harmonized and streamlined licensing of fishing vessels and other charges in line with the sub-region.
  • Acquired land at Sulima for office use and has commenced the construction of the structure
  • In 2019, implemented a closed season as one of the minister measures to ensure re building of fish stocks.

This was described by development partners as unprecedented move ever in the history of S/L.

  • Conducted one leg of comprehensive fish stock assessment in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of S/L which is going for a period of 3yrs.
  • As management measures to ensure the distribution of the much needed protein to other regions, has facilitated the operation of cold rooms in Buedu in Kailahun District, Sulima in Pujehun District and there are plans to install similar facilities in Bonthe,Shenge,Konakri D,Tombo and Goderich under UNDP/ MFMR partnership.
  • Has engaged the EU Directorate – General for Health and Food Safety to facilitate export of fish and fishery products- All these strides are geared towards promoting responsible and sustainable fisheries practices through good governance, while contributing to poverty reduction and wealth creation.

Hon. Emma Kowa Jalloh expressed her sincere appreciation to HE, the President and the Government of SL, Management and Staff of MFMR for providing the financial and moral support as well as the enabling environment for the Ministry to operate and function properly.
