On the 26th July, 2020, there was a wakeup cry caused by a heavy downpour of rain, leading to flooding and leaving many homeless and properties destroyed in a town called LALEHUN KOVOMA, Bombowa Section, Njaluahun Chiefdom in Kailahun District, Easter part of Sierra Leone.
The flooding started at the late hours of Saturday- 25th July, 2020. The Koya River which overflooded its bank spilled over and destroyed many houses and properties.
Fortunately, there were no deaths recorded but houses, properties including food and other items were completely destroyed according to sources.
Foday Glogar- the Sierra Leone Peoples Party S.L.P.P Chairman for Bombowa Section said, similar scenario happened in 2017, but the destruction rate this year had never been seen over years in the town, being the second largest town after Segbwema in Njaluahun Chiefdom.
The Flooding left 22 houses completely damaged and 29 partially damaged, 5 Toilets completely damaged and 4 partially damaged, 3 kitchen completely damaged and 4 partially damaged.
The Paramount Chief assisted with 4bags of rice and le, 250,000 as a partial assistance to the affected families.
In his statement, the town Chief of the affected community- Chief Ansumana Jeigula called on the central Government and Non- governmental organizations to come to their aid in assisting the affected persons. As a way of controlling the situation, people are asked to leave the said affected areas and have catchment within the neighborhood. Chief Jeigula added that, there will be challenges in sorting out accommodation for the affected families without external intervention.
Counselor Bockarie J. Sannoh expressed his concern over the situation and asked on the people to be very careful and alert going forward.
