A tragic incident occurred at the Boundary Gold Mining Site in Kumao Town, Nimikoro Chiefdom, Kono District, on Thursday, 18th December 2025, leaving four people dead and three others hospitalized. The incident happened when a mud slide collapsed on seven miners who were working at the site.
The Operations team, led by the Local Unit Commander, CSP Mohamed Turay, responded promptly to the scene after receiving information from the Officer Commanding, Kumao Police Post, Inspector Mohamed Joe Kanu. A thorough search and rescue operation was conducted, resulting in the retrieval of four dead bodies and the rescue of three survivors, who were immediately taken to the Koidu Government Hospital for treatment.
The deceased victims were identified as Abdul Bangura, Fatmata Bangura, Admansay Thullah, and Sampa Kargbo, all residents of Kumao Town. The survivors, Abdul Koroma, Abass Fullah, and Hawa Fullah, are receiving medical attention at the hospital.
The owner of the mining site has been identified as one alias Recent. The Criminal Investigations Department is conducting an investigation into the incident to determine the cause and nature of the deaths.
Addressing a crowd of miners and community stakeholders at the site, CSP Turay cautioned against unprotected and illicit mining, highlighting the dangers and risks involved. He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged miners to prioritize their safety.
