The Parliamentary Oversight Committees on Transparency and Communications in a joint committee setting in Parliament commended Qcell Sierra Leone Mobile Company for maintaining its mobile data prices despite the recent massive increase in data tariffs by other Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) across the country.
The commendation came during an oversight engagement held at Parliament Building, Tower Hill, Freetown, where the committees chaired by Hon. Maada Lebbie (Transparency) and Hon. Boston Munda (Communications) reviewed the current trends in data pricing and service delivery within Sierra Leone’s telecommunications sector.
Hon. Maada Lebbie praised Qcell-Sierra Leone for demonstrating corporate responsibility and empathy towards its customers at a time when many operators have adjusted their data costs upward, citing operational challenges. He noted that Qcell’s decision not to increase its prices has helped ease the financial burden on citizens, especially students, small businesses, and low income earners who depend heavily on mobile data for communication, education, and business activities.
Chairman of the Communications Committee, Hon. Boston Munda, also lauded the company for its continued investment in service quality and network expansion without compromising affordability. He described Qcell’s move as a “bold and patriotic gesture” that reflects a genuine commitment to national development and consumer welfare.
Responding, a senior management representative from Qcell-Sierra Leone expressed gratitude for Parliament’s recognition and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering quality and affordable services to all Sierra Leoneans. He added that Qcell’s business model focuses not only on profitability but also on customer satisfaction and social impact.
The joint committees assured that Parliament will continue to support and encourage fair competition within the telecommunications sector while ensuring that operators act transparently and in the best interest of the public.
