As part of its commitment to contribute to improving education in Freetown schools, the Mayor, Councilors and staff of the Freetown City Council, today, launched the School Leader Support Program. The project aims to provide on-field training and mentoring for school administrators to help them meet minimum standards that the Council has set for running schools in Freetown.
This project, a collaboration with EducAid and The Rising Academy Network, was created to meet the #TransformFreetown education Target 1, which seeks to “ensure that by 2022, 100% of schools for which FCC has responsibility are covered by a monitoring framework that includes teaching, learning, and safety standards.”
Through this project, 24 cluster mentors will regularly visit schools, collect data, share ideas with and support heads of schools and work to build collaboration between schools; all with the ultimate aim to improve school safety, quality of teaching and learning, and school leadership and management.
The project is being piloted in 550 schools and each school will be given one of three different types of support;
- One training for school leaders each term
- One training for school leaders each term plus one school visit each term
- One training for school leaders each term plus school visits every other week
Varying the support to schools will allow the project team to understand which type of support is most effective to improve school standards.
In her statement, Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr stated that collaboration is key to transforming the education sector, and that even though the costs are high, we can make the changes needed in our classrooms and transform the lives of children in our care through collaboration.
In attendance at today’s launch were representatives from Freetown City Council, The Ministry of Education, DSTI, Rising Academy, Representatives of the Free Quality Education, Head Teachers Council, Conference of Principals, National Council of Head Teachers, Sierra Leone Teachers Union amongst others.
We are happy to be able to provide practical support to schools and improve the learning experiences for both teachers and pupils.
