As result of the Disaster of soil degradation and depletion that took place at Wright Street, Portee, East of Freetown, the Honourable of Constituency 116, Emmanuel Sahr Gbeke in Freetown has on 27th August, 2020, donated food items to victims of the Portee disaster.
The items which were donated are :three(3) bags of rice (Butter brand,50kg),Eggs(3 crates),Sardines (6 in 3 sets),sweet machine bread (6 sets in plastic),Nido Milk three big cups, Matches 3 sets, Mosquitoes Coils 9 sets, Soaps, Tea leaf in a sets, Mayonnaise 3 big bottles, Butter 3 Rubbers. All these items with exception of the three bags of rice were put in four blue plastic bags on Thursday night at the SLMB Disaster home costing approximately 2 to 3millions.
In his presentation, the Honourable, Emmanuel Sahr Gbeke apologized for the time he came and empathized with the Victims at the SLMB school adding that he had received videos and photographs of the disaster areas and what happened to them during that faithful day. He further disclosed that Victims should be patient and wait has not all is lost; he would try hard and go extra mile to make sure that Victims maintain sustainable and normal living again.
The Councillor of Ward 409, East of Freetown, Portee, Madam Fatmata Cecilia Williams during her response called on the Honourable for more interventions and to work hand in gloves to ensure that they go extra miles to lobby for the disaster victims in the Portee Community, as the victims had left homeless with no shelter except the SLMB School which was instructed by Deputy Mayor of the Freetown City Council for them to shelter themselves in.
Currently according to the statistics provided by stakeholders in the Portee for the number of Victims reads that, Victims presently living are 113,Household 13, 3 pregnant Women(one taking the 2020 WASSCE exams),Under-age: Boys 22,Girls 28,Adults 133,Women 30 and 1 Disable .
Madam Mariatu, one of the Victims in the community said that they have occupied the said disaster areas since 1986 and according to her the three stores building which is presently erected in the said disaster prone area is being occupied by 29 people.
Sources close to the covenant averred that so far several non-governmental organizations have visited the scene but no relief has been rendered to them amidst the donation giving to them by the honourable Member of Parliament.
