The Parliament of Sierra Leone has officially approved the appointment of Joseph Maada Lahai as the new Commissioner of the National Youth Commission (NAYCOM), signalling a renewed national focus on youth empowerment and development.

This appointment marks a critical step in President Julius Maada Bio’s strategic drive to bolster youth-focused governance and strengthen institutional frameworks supporting young people across the country. The move is widely seen as a continuation of the president’s broader vision to harness the potential of Sierra Leone’s youth as a cornerstone for national development.
Commissioner Lahai is expected to bring dynamic leadership and strategic oversight to NAYCOM’s operations as the commission implements programs designed to empower, engage, and uplift young people throughout Sierra Leone.
His new role will involve the formulation and execution of policies that promote education, entrepreneurship, employability, civic participation, and innovation among youth.

Youth development is a vital component of national progress, as it lays the foundation for a skilled, productive, and engaged citizenry. With over 60% of Sierra Leone’s population under the age of 35, investing in youth is not only crucial for social stability but also for sustainable economic growth and democratic consolidation.

President Bio’s commitment to youth empowerment is expected to yield long-term dividends for the entire country. By equipping young people with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed, the government aims to reduce unemployment, curb social vulnerabilities, and foster a generation of leaders and innovators who will shape Sierra Leone’s future.

In a statement following Lahai’s approval, NAYCOM’s staff expressed their enthusiasm to work alongside the new Commissioner. “We congratulate Commissioner Joseph Maada Lahai on his appointment and look forward to working with him as he begins this vital mission,” the Commission’s stated.

As he assumes this pivotal role, Commissioner Lahai is poised to become a driving force in Sierra Leone’s journey toward a more inclusive and prosperous future—one where the development of its youth is placed at the heart of national transformation.
