MFMR  Engages  Fishing Communities in Southern Province

The Permanent,  Ministry of Fisheries, and Marine Resources, Brima Kebbie, who, chaired, the sessions, stressed the importance of the engagements and entreated  stakeholders to compliment the effort of the ministry in promoting legal, sustainable and responsible fishing.

Responding, stakeholders from the respective communities thanked the team for the visits and lauded the ministry’s effort in promoting sustainable management of the sector through the Closed Season initiative, describing it as “a very successful management tool.”

They appealed for the restoration of the ministry’s Outstations to their past glory as well as the provision of requisite fishing gears to enhance the development of their fishing occupation.

The impressive turnout of stakeholders and rousing welcome accorded the minister and entourage, by singing, drumming, and dancing, demonstrated the latter’s unwavering commitment to complimenting government’s efforts in ensuring the sector is appropriately streamlined.

Addressing stakeholders in the various localities visited, the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Princess Dugba said, the purpose of the meetings, was to remind them about the importance of the forthcoming Closed Season Programme, scheduled to take place in February, next year and sensitise them on the need  to renounce illegal fishing  and engage in responsible and sustainable fisheries practices, among others

Mrs. Dugba commended them for strictly observing rules governing last year’s closed season, which primary aim is to provide an opportunity for fish stock to multiply and prevent them from depletion.

She warned against the misuse of natural resources, including forests and mangroves, while disclosing plans by her ministry and the African Development Bank to engage and provide training and alternative livelihoods for women in fisheries.

She assured them of a very successful closed season next year and hoped they would continue to promote the ministry’s objectives.
