Freetown, Sierra Leone – Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Technology, Salamatu Bah, has announced a major breakthrough in mobile connectivity, assuring Sierra Leoneans that mobile operators are now offering reliable, faster, and more efficient communication services following the rollout of the country’s latest mobile network innovation, referred to as 5.9G.

Speaking at a press briefing in Freetown, Minister Bah acknowledged that for many years, mobile users in Sierra Leone struggled to reach their intended contacts due to overloaded transmission poles and limited network capacity in key areas. This, she said, caused frequent delays in call connectivity and message delivery.

“With the radical technological advancements of the 21st century and a rising population, Sierra Leone cannot afford to be left behind. Our citizens deserve communication that is fast, dependable, and efficient,” she noted.

The Minister highlighted that the early mobile infrastructure—identified as 3G and 4.5G—paved the way for mobile access in the country. However, she emphasized that the newly introduced 5.9G network is a game-changer. “This innovation is the most reliable and speedy yet. It directly addresses the needs of today’s mobile users in Sierra Leone,” she added.

Minister Bah also spoke about her ministry’s commitment to technological innovation beyond mobile connectivity. She revealed that the ministry has been on a nationwide tour engaging young people, equipping them with innovative skills and supporting youth-led initiatives in the digital space.

“We have done a lot to enhance communication at all levels and continue to work to ensure that technology is accessible and beneficial to all,” the Minister concluded.

The public is optimistic that the improved network capacity and increased mobile tower coverage will significantly boost communication, business, and education nationwide.
