NJALA, CORONA COMMITTEE SUBMITS RECOMMENDATIONS FOR REOPENING

The Deputy Vice Chancellor for Bo Campus, Professor Mohamed Syed Fofanah has on Tuesday, 22 September 2020 summoned Deans, Heads of Department and some key Administrative staff to a meeting at the  Conference room, Towama location to discuss preparations for the return of Third, Second and First Year students to the second semester session.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor intimated his team that the University Administration has supported Bo Campus with an amount of Le50,000,000 (fifty million Leones) to help put in place Corona preventive measures at the two locations.

The meeting resolved to ask the Chairman of a committee of fiVe formed on July 21st, 2020 dubbed Bo Campus COVID-19 Preparedness Committee to report on the operations of the committee for the past two months. Members of the committee include: Dr. James Fomba Sandy, Acting Dean, School of Social Sciences and Law, as Chairman; Dr. Philip F.Y. Thulla, Director of INSLACS, Mr. Mohamed S. Kamara, Senior Assistant Finance Officer, Mr. Sheku A. Mannah, Dean of Students, and Mr. Ahmed Vandi, Head of  Department, Environmental Health and Clinical Studies. The Committee also co-opted two Community Health Officers from the two locations, one Admin each from the three Schools and the Public Relations Assistant, Mr. Ayuba Koroma, to serve as Secretary to the Committee.

The Committee submitted a number of measures to be taken in tandem with the protocols established by the National COVID-19 Response Centre (NACOVERC). The committee had also included penalties for defaulters and a budget to carry out key preventive tasks.

 The Committee also recommended in the report that staff and Students should always wear face masks at all times while on Campus and in lectures rooms, maintain good health behaviour such as: hand washing before entering offices and lecture rooms, covering coughs and sneezes with the elbow; maintain the standard social distancing of one meter, temperatures checked, avoiding hand shake at all times, and teach in a class size of seventy students in a socially distanced manner.

The Dean of Students was urged to ensure that the movement of Students residing in the hostels is restricted, and to encourage all wardens to maintain the protocols. Deans, Heads of Department were also encouraged to get their staff to abide by the protocols.

Students, the committee also recommended are required to be properly dressed in line with the National COVID-19 protocols, have personal hand sanitizers, write their names on the daily attendance list, ensure their temperatures checked, and refrain from using the library until further notice. Food hawkers are also expected to follow all the national prevention and control measures, while also ensuring foodstuffs are sold in a clean environment and helping compliance to the measures.

The brief meeting chaired by the Deputy Vice Chancellor was for the proper trimming of the budget items presented by the committee. The meeting resolved that the committee make a proper adjustment on the budget for onward submission to the Bo Campus Administration.
