Njala University Dismisses False Allegations Against the Vice Chancellor and Principal
The Administration of Njala University firmly rejects the misleading publication by Vantage Newspaper’s “Busy Bee” column on Tuesday, 24th June 2025, which made unfounded allegations against the Vice Chancellor and Principal, Alhaji Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma.
Since his appointment on 1st September 2023, Professor Koroma has led with transparency, innovation, and a commitment to institutional development. Under his leadership.
- Payroll allowances have been paid consistently despite delayed government subventions.
- The University has completed phase one of the SAGE financial software rollout and is now assessing phase two to ensure a robust, corruption-resistant system.
- Njala received its first-ever unqualified audit opinion from external auditors.
- A 100kW solar grid now powers key buildings, allowing 24-hour student access to electricity for the first time in history.
- Infrastructure and sanitation projects are underway with government and donor support.
Allegations of unlawful Court appointments are false; all appointments comply with Section 11 of the Universities Act of 2021. Recruitment remains merit-based, transparent, and guided by the Appointments and Promotions Committee.
In terms of staff welfare:
- NLe 500,000 is allocated annually for academic research.
- Millions of Leones in tuition waivers and interest-free staff loans have been granted.
- Over 20 staff have received study leave support, an institutional record.
Utility challenges at Njala reflect national infrastructure issues, not administrative failure. Efforts are ongoing to improve water and electricity access through solar and borehole projects.
Claims of intimidation are baseless. Professor Koroma’s consultative leadership style is evident in his open-door policy and regular engagement with staff and students.
Lastly, Professor Koroma’s tenure fully aligns with the Universities Act, and he is legally serving the remainder of his four-year term.
Njala University remains focused on academic excellence, integrity, and nation-building. We urge the media and public to reject false narratives and support fact-based dialogue.
