The phenomenon of putting round pegs in square holes has grievously affected the efficiency in the output of many workplaces in this part of planet earth and if not tackle with immediacy has the proclivity to further devastate the already fragile fabrics of our society.

Recent researches done by development experts in Sierra Leone have proven that political interference in the appointments of officials into government offices and other workplaces has been the chief reason that allows unqualified persons who cannot effectively deliver in their appointed capacities to administer significant positions that strongly determine the development of the state.

It was also revealed that the recruitment and appointments of persons into such positions are contingent on the political contribution and allegiance that the individual has contributed to the party in question especially during the periods of election campaigns.

To us the covenant newspaper, we are of the view that the appointment of individuals to certain positions because of their political allegiance and contribution may tend to stimulate and promote massive corruption in government offices due to the fact that the appointee in question may have the tendency to corrupt with impunity owing to the circumstance that he was appointed to that office by virtue of his political participation and loyalty and therefore he is always protected by the powers that be.

Again, it is also realized that must of the recruitments made by authorities into important government offices are done base on tribal or regional lines which according to the covenant newspaper, do not augur well for the development of a creeping nation like Sierra Leone.

Therefore, the covenant newspaper is of the opinion that Sierra Leone as a nation will only climb the leather of development if the authorities in concern desist from recruiting government workers on the bases of tribalism and regionalism, as it has a serious impact in snail pacing the development process of a nation.

In lieu to this, however, it could be discerned that many offices could not end up deliver their expected outcomes because they lack the required expertise and relevant resources that have the capacity and requisite knowledge to perform the responsibility effectively and efficiently in a professional manner.

As a country that is at the bottom level in the development index, the covenant newspaper is of the view that we should desist from the culture of appointing people into important offices base on their political participation or affiliation as it has the potential to undermine the development aspiration of the state.

We are also of the strong conviction that the recruitment of qualify Sierra Leoneans who have the ability to dispense responsibility charged upon them meritoriously, to administer pertinent offices should not be taken with a pinch of salt as it helps in erecting the already defunct structures of the country’s administrative systems.

In this regard, therefore the covenant newspaper is using this platform to admonish authorities responsible for the recruitment of especially, those insignificant government offices to ensure that appropriate recruitment methods that are based on merit are put in place during the recruitment process, so as to avert the possible scenario of putting the wrong person at the right place.

At this juncture, the covenant newspaper is calling on the authorities vested with the responsibility of recruiting workers into the civil service of Sierra Leone and other development sectors, especially those in the public service commission, to ensure that appropriate measures that are set down by the commission for the recruitment of workers are being applied during recruitment process rather than the sentimental recruitment base on tribalism, regionalism or party fidelity.
