A women’s rights foundation has raised concern over the growing injustices faced by widows and vulnerable women in rural settings especially in the Pujehun district. Sowa called for stronger collaboration between traditional authorities, state institutions and communities to end the abuse and ensure justice for widows and vulnerable

The foundation lawyers explained existing laws that safeguard widows, including the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act and the Devolution of Estates Act, stressing that these laws prohibit discrimination and unlawful deprivation of property.

Legal practitioners from various legal firms attached to the foundation were present at a recent engagement aimed at protecting widows who are often disadvantaged by in-laws after the death of their spouses. The foundation outlined its key interventions, which include advocacy and public sensitisation, provision of legal services, counselling, and empowerment support for affected widows.

Paramount chiefs and other state authorities attended the occasion and pledged their commitment to support efforts to protect widows’ rights within their chiefdoms and communities
